These days pretty much everyone agrees that recycling glass, plastic and aluminum is a good thing; Recycling plays a big part in preserving the environment, makes communities cleaner and more attractive, and conserves valuable resources for future generations. But who has time to gather soda cans, bottles and plastic containers and take them to a recycling centre every week or two?
It is estimated that the average Canadian produces about 30,000,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste each year. That’s 1.8 kg (4 lbs.) per day for every person. The Conference Board of Canada gave Canada a C grade on garbage production per capita and ranked it in 15th place among 17 developed nations studied across a host of environmental-efficiency metrics.

How Recycling Helps the Earth
Recycling glass, plastic, aluminum and other materials conserves energy and natural resources and reduces greenhouse gases and air and water pollution. For example:
Aluminum – Recycling of aluminum cans saves 95% of the energy required to make the same amount of aluminum from its virgin source. One ton of recycled aluminum saves 14,000 kilowatt hours (Kwh) of energy, 40 barrels of oil, 238 million Btu's of energy, and 10 cubic yards of landfill space.
Plastic – One ton of recycled plastic saves 5,774 Kwh of energy, 16.3 barrels of oil, 98 million BTUs of energy, and 30 cubic yards of landfill space.
Glass – One ton of recycled glass saves 42 Kwh of energy, 0.12 barrels of oil (5 gallons), 714,000 BTUs of energy, and 2 cubic yards of landfill space. It also avoids the release of 7.5 pounds of air pollutants. Over 30% of the raw material used in glass production now comes from recycled glass.
North Hill Bottle Depot in Calgary offers fair prices for bottle return and recycling with drop-off or pick up options.
